Subject Complements • Used only with a State of Being/Linking Verb • Follow the verb and describe the subject. • Used instead of a Direct Object
First Set • George is a pig. • George is a pretty pig. • George is pretty. • George is not I. • Predicate Noun • Predicate Adjective • Predicate Pronoun
Second Set • The forsythia is a yellow bush. • The forsythia is a bush that appears in the spring. • The flowers of the forsythia are yellow. • The forsythia is not I. • Predicate Noun • Predicate Adjective • Predicate Pronoun
Third Set • Fat Albert is a comedian. • Fat Albert is a funny comedian. • Fat Albert is funny. • Fat Albert is not I. • Predicate Noun • Predicate Adjective • Predicate Pronoun
Note: • A Predicate Noun can be preceded by an adjective. • A Predicate Adjective has NO noun after it. • A Predicate Pronoun must be a Subject Pronoun.
