Memory Verse “If thou hast run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canst thou contend with horses? and though in a land of peace thou art secure, yet how wilt thou do in the pride of the Jordan?” JEREMIAH 12:5
AVOIDING DISCOURAGEMENT • Focus on God not on ourselves • Cling to God’s promises STEPS WE NEED TO MAKE
STEP ONE FOCUS ON GOD NOT ON OURSELVES
Focus on God • We should not use religious power to pursue our selfish ambitions A. How should the disciples of Christ view political power? John 6:14-15
Focus on God • Judas lost his soul over his love of money • Greedy motives should not poison your role as a disciple of Christ B. What lesson does Judas have for us? John 12:4-6
STEP TWO CLING TO GOD’S PROMISES
Cling to God’s Promises A. What lesson can we take away from Peter’s rashness and repentance? Matt. 26:69-75 • How crucial it is that we day by day surrender ourselves to Jesus • Without Jesus we can do nothing
Cling to God’s Promises B. What does this teach us about what Jesus can do for His disciples who, repenting of their mistakes, do not give up on Christ? John 21:15-19 • Secret sins are to be confessed in secret to God, but, for open sin, open confession is required
Cling to God’s Promises C. Why, after having so much, did all the disciples forsake Jesus in the hour of His great need? Matthew 26:56 • Jesus tried to show His followers what lay ahead, but they would not listen • We need to meditate on all Jesus has done for us: the promises, the hope
