  2. How does the zeitgeist of the Regionalism period affect the literary themes in American Literature? The zeitgeist of this time period, not only contained characteristics of both Romanticism and Realism, but also local color. The environment the author was in affected their writing as well.
  3. Definition of Regionalism 1860 – Early 1900’s A literary movement in which writers attempt to depict and analyze the distinctive and unique qualities of a geographical area and its people. A “bridge” between Romanticism and Realism.
  4. Definition of “local color” Highlights characteristics and details unique to a specific area. Ex. An author living in Missouri may write stories based around Missouri dialect, culture, and situations

Civil War First battle - Fort Sumter (1861) Jefferson Davis was the first President of the Confederacy Abraham Lincoln was the president of the union at the time The union wanted to stop the spread of slavery and the south wanted to expand slavery into the western territories Robert E. Lee was a major general for the confederacy Ulysses S. Grant was a major general for the union South Carolina was the first state to secede Other states to secede: Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, Mississippi, North Carolina Robert E. Lee surrendered to the Union in 1865, ending the civil war.

Marshall at Sutter’s Mill in Coloma, California all of this new news was spread and 300,000 came to California gold seekers were called fourty-niners There were boomtowns (San Fran) small settlements grew into huge towns. boomtowns were present all throughout California steamships came into service, railroads connected east and west finally native Americans were attacked and were told to move from land most of the gold was in northern California right before compromise of 1850

Industrialization machines replaced doing everything by hand mass production after the civil war population increase in cities sharp contrast between rich and poor (small percentage of rich were super wealthy, larger middle class lived comfortably, huge population in extreme poverty) slums industrial growth was mainly in north because south was far behind economically after the civil war immigration at 100 million made use of natural resources new products( type writer 1867, barbed wire 1874, telephone 1876, phonograph 1877, electric light 1879, petrol-engine car 1885) new banks and investment end of western frontier (homestead act passed 1862 offered public land for free or at a very low cost) Gilded Age-era of industrialization (Mark Twain)

Reforms progressive era (1890-1917) people wanted change in the U.S’s economic, political and social systems wanted to regulate big business(monopolies/trusts), reduce poverty, improve living conditions, end corruption some wealthy businessman were John D. Rockefeller, Andrew Carnegie, and Cornelius Vanderbilt... American Federation of Labor(AFL) by Samuel Gompers, union that helped workers work towards better working conditions and wages Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton founded National Woman Suffrage Association presidents during this era : Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson Ida Tarbell used her writing to expose the corruption in the monopolies.

  13. Bret Harte(1836-1902) Born in Albany, New York During the California Gold rush (1848), he moved west to California. Some of his jobs here were as a schoolteacher, tutor, messenger, clerk, and a prospector. He published stories, short novels, and plays. His short stories were inspired by his surroundings. Some of his works: Outcroppings (1865), The Lost Galleon (1867), The Luck of Roaring Camp (1870 Harte was also the editor of a new literary magazine, the Overland Monthly, where he published many of his short stories, such as The Outcasts of Poker Flat (1869).
