  3. Curriculum • What are the opportunities in our system to convey principles mandated by curriculum? What are the competencies associated with what learners need to know? • Developing an (e-)portfolio for each trainee/level of training • Mapping & Distributing Competency-based Curricula: Tools and Techniques (John Voss) • Used by faculty now • Interested in expanding this to learners

Equivalent Experience • How patient exposure at a VA hospital with a suburban hospital? • Virtual patients • Guided care of virtual patient can enhance outcomes • Simucase: Interactive Virtual Patients to Improve Clinical Reasoning (Tim Willet) • Determine knowledge gaps • Self-Assessment within a Learner-Prescribed CME/CE Curriculum (DestrySulkes)

  5. Assess Readiness • Track performance • Automatic Capture of Clinical Notes (Anderson Spickard) • Simulation vs. clinical experience • What experience correlates with being safe? Achieving mastery? • Assessment tools – Peter’s triangulation between teacher, learner and skill • Individual as part of a team • Darrell Kirchspoke of the need for a new culture in healthcare fostering collaboration and transparency

Distinguish Service from Education • Impact of 80 hour work week on clinical experience and service “needs” of hospital • Promoting team care • Unconference on Transforming Medical Education - how assess individual in a team • Break down silos of professional education • Mapping competencies across curricula may be key to seeing opportunities

Lifelong Learning StrategiesNimble Learning During Life Events • Establish patterns during residency that prepare learners for MOC/CPD • Steve Clyman, Cary Sennet and others spoke about ongoing physician evaluation and portfolios • How can we continue learning during life events? • Webcast conferences, grand rounds,etc. • E-learning • Virtual patient experiences • Virtual participation in patient care
