  2. Essential Question • What is a narcotic and how does it affect the human body? What is a hallucinogen and how does it affect the human body?

Narcotics – specific drugs derived from the opium plant that are obtainable only by prescription legally and are used to relieve pain • relieve pain by blocking messengers to the brain • use can cause euphoria, drowsiness, constipation, pinpoint pupils, slow and shallow breathing, convulsions, coma, and death • highly addictive • Ex: prescription painkillers

  4. Heroin highly addictive narcotic • processed form of morphine that is injected, snorted or smoked • depresses the CNS • slows breathing and pulse • can cause infection of heart lining and valves • easily developed tolerance • withdrawal can be very painful

  5. Hallucinogens • drugs that alter moods, thoughts, and sense perceptions including vision, hearing, smell, and touch. • No medical use!! • overload the sensory controls in the brain • altered state can last for several hours or several days • effects are unpredictable

  6. PCP • distorts sense of time and space • increased muscles strength • inability to feel pain • flashbacks can occur

  7. LSD (acid) • distorts sound and color • changes emotions • ranging from euphoria to panic and depression • flashbacks

  8. Ketamine • anesthetic mostly used on animals • misused as a club drug • snorted powder or injected • also smoked and cause hallucinations

  9. Mushrooms • psilocybin • changes the audio, visual, and tactile senses • grown only in Central and South America

  10. Ecstasy and Designer drugs • Designer Drugs – synthetic substances meant to imitate the effects of hallucinogens and other dangerous drugs • vary greatly • can be 100 times stronger than the drug meant to imitate
