History of How This All Began • Born in California, 2/15/11 • Lived with Mother until 18 • 1st Job with United Fruit Co. • Jack of all trades on the ships • Went to College (Nautical School) Marine tine Academy near Vallejo, California • Graduated from California Nautical School in 1933 Cy Hansen in ASHRAE
History of Cy Hansen (Continued) • 1934 SF Dock Strikes – He stood picket duty • 1935 Radio operators strike – Went home fm Mobile, Alabama by Train to San Francisco, Ca., Got a job with Matson lines on the Hawaii ship “Golden Cowery” • 1936 Got a job Teaching on School Ship by passing Civil Service Exam for the Academy and taught Thermodynamics, Internal Combustion Engine Theory, Boiler operations and maintenance for shipping lines. • 1941-46 with Matson as 1st&2nd Assistant Engineer Cy Hansen in ASHRAE

History of Cy Hansen (Continued) • In August 1944 worked as the Night “Chief Engineer” on the “Y Peel” ship that went to the Aleutians (This was the same ship he started on in 1934 the Golden Cowery) • 1946 the war was over and with cut backs he went into design of swimming pools for Nino LoPrest in 1947 • Nino found him a job with Clyde Bently who was doing a lot of schools and hospitals plans for Marin County • He stayed with Bently Engineers for 30 years • He joined ASHRAE in 1963 at the Golden Gate Chapter Cy Hansen in ASHRAE
History of Cy Hansen (Continued) • Bently, Kelburg, and Puge kept him busy throughout the US and the world i.e. Power plant in Subic Bay, Manila • Engineers did it all for these projects – Electrical, Structural,Architectural, and Mechanical Plans and Specs • Cy’s P.E. History of Cy Hansen (Continued) • Why was ASHRAE important? It published the Bible of the industry for designing HVAC even A/C in SF • He recalls Equitable Insurance Co. started the A/C in SF and then Financial types, and finally hospitals needed it. • His first Reno job was in 1948 for St. Mary’s Hospital. His boss, Clyde, knew Monk Farris, who knew Sister Sarafine and the pump problems for the steam conversion exchangers were solved by Cy. • In 1972 he opened the Branch office of Bently Engineers and finished the career with them in 1986. In Conclusion • Cyril Gano Hansen – A long time supporter of ASHRAE • Well known in this community and the World • An educator, an expert boiler operator, and LEADER • He served with many ASHRAE Presidents including Bill Goodman, Bruno Morabito, Don Holte, Richard Perry, David Butler, Damon McGowan to mention a few. • Northern Nevada’s Chapters highest ranking Chapter Member and Mentor for us all.
