  2. H O Living things consist of atoms • An atom is the smallest basic unit of matter. • An element is one type of atom. Hydrogen atom (H) Examples: Oxygen atom (O)

  3. Atoms are composed of three particles: • The nucleus has protons (+) and neutrons (o). • Electrons (-) orbit in energy levels around a nucleus. Nucleus:protons (+)neutrons (o) Energy level or orbital holds electrons (-)

Definitions • Atomic Number = number of protons • Atomic weight/mass = # of protons + # of neutrons • Finding Protons, Electrons & Neutrons • Protons = Atomic number on Periodic Table • Electrons = same as protons • Neutrons = Atomic mass - Atomic number • (# protons + # neutrons) - # protons • ****No negative numbers, only whole numbers

  5. Oxygen atom (O) Nucleus:8 protons (+)8 neutrons inner energy level can hold 2 electrons (-) Diagramming Atoms All other energy levels can hold 8 electrons (-) Valence electrons: Electrons in the outermost energy level
