Engineering Materials • The materials which are used only for engineering purposes are termed as engineering materials. • Engineering use means use of materials to make various tools or things for ease of human lifestyle. • We use various properties of those materials to make them work for our purpose.

Properties of metals • Physical Properties • Good Electrical and Heat Conductors • Malleable • Ductile • Posses Metallic lusture • Solid at room temperature( except Hg) • Chemical properties • Usually have 1-3 electron in outer shell • Loose their valence electron easily • Forms oxides that are basic
Properties of non-metals • Physical Properties • Poor conductor of heat and electricity • Brittle- if solid • Non ductile • Do not posses metallic lusture • Transparent as thin sheets • Solid, liquid or gaseous at room temperature • Chemical properties • Usually have 4-8 electrons in their outer shell • Gain or share valence electron easily • Forms oxides that are acidic • Are good oxidizing agents
Ceramics • Ceramic material are inorganic material made from compound of metals and non-metals • They are formed by action of heat and then subsequent cooling • Brittle in nature are good conductor of heat and electricity • Excellent compressive strength
