The Magic Formula • I – Introduction • D – Developmental Paragraphs • C – Conclusion Formula: + idea @ topic + idea @ topic + idea @ topic
The Thesis Statement • Expresses an attitude or opinion about a topic • Presents the controlling idea for the essay • A complete sentence • Appears in the introductory paragraph (last) Formula: Topic + Opinion/Position on Topic = Thesis
The Funnel Approach Broad Formula:+ ing subjects or noun topics Narrow Formula: + category within topic Specific Formula: + illustrative or emotionally powerful word (s)
Developmental Paragraphs • Each paragraph develops one aspect of the main topic (+idea @ topic) • The controlling idea in each topic sentence and supports should echo the thesis statement • Formula: repeat the descriptive/illustrative words from the thesis using synonyms in the dev. paragraphs • Achieve coherence & unity through transitions • Transitions used = rhetorical pattern (i.e. exemplification, compare/contrast, cause effect) • These patters are the same as the paragraph patterns
