Green Chemistry, what is it? “Green chemistry consists of environmentally friendly, sustainable chemicals and processes whose use results in reduced waste, safer outputs, and reduced or eliminated pollution and environmental damage. Green chemistry encourages innovation and promotes the creation of products that are both environmentally and economically sustainable.” — United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) This presentation will be on the fourth of The12 Principles of Green Chemistry. _
Principle 4:Use Renewable Feedstock Use raw materials and feedstock that are renewable rather than depleting. Renewable feedstock is often made from agricultural products or are the wastes of other processes; depleting feedstock are made from fossil fuels (petroleum, natural gas, or coal) or are mined. _

Renewable feedstock Some renewable feedstock include: plants (such as corn), wind and solar light. _

Renewable feedstock Wind and solar light is now more used as an alternate, clean power source. Corn is commonly used to produce ethanol. Ethanol is best known as the alcohol in alcoholic beverages but is also becoming more used as type of fuel. _

The future, Genomatica’s way. With Genomatica’s understanding of biological adaptation, many more microbes may be able to be modified to create other chemical products. With this second breakthrough, Genomatica has proven an important component of the technology: to predict and then rapidly build an organism that produces the target product. So much of what we do in biotechnology is trial and error, but this represents a unique step in the industry. —Jay Keasling, professor of chemical engineering and bioengineering at UC Berkeley, and CEO of the Joint BioEnergy Institute _ _
