Time-Management 101 • Overview • Advantages to better time-management • Self- assessment • Tools: • Time Tracker • To do lists • Scheduling
Time Management 101 • Advantages to better Time Management • Promotes prioritizing and a more intentional way of spending time. • Can help to reduce stress. • Facilitates goal achievement and a reduction in procrastination. • Encourages balance & overall well-being.
Time Management 101 • Self-assessment exercise: How well do you use your time?
Time-Management 101 • Tracking your Time • Useful self-assessment tool • Complete an activity log for 1-2 weeks • Do your activities reflect your priorities? • Note changes in energy levels, identify time-wasting activities, and time blocks which can be used differently
Time Management 101 • To do lists • Can accompany your agenda use. • Indicate all the tasks you wish to carry out, can be daily, weekly, etc. • Prioritize considering three levels of urgency: MUST do, SHOULD do, and COULD do.
Time Management 101 • Creating a Schedule • Realism • Balance • Practice • Assess
Time Management 101 • Creating a Schedule • Factor in fixed time commitments • Find periods of time for study • Use time after class for study • Consider using breaks for studying • Keep your study sessions short (1-2 hours), with specific goals attached
Time Management 101 • Creating a schedule cont’d • Keep regular hours for studying each week (routine) as well as a regular place • Leave time for other aspects of your life, include basics such as sleeping, eating, and exercising as well as personal interests, socializing, and errands/chores.
Time Management 101 • Reminders: • Realism • Balance • Practice • Assess
Time Management 101 • Two final considerations • Reward yourself for tackling difficult tasks, settings goals and achieving them. • Are you doing too much? Is there something you can cut back on?
Time Management 101 • Create your own tentative schedule for the semester/week. • Add in your fixed commitments, times you can devote to regular study, times you would like to keep for leisure, other involvements, etc. • If you were to anticipate one area that might be a challenge- what might it be and how might you tackle that?
Time Management 101 • “The bad news is that time flies. The good news is that you’re the pilot.” • - Michael Altshuler
