  1. Earth and Moon Motion 8-4.4

  2. Learning Objectives 8-4 You will be able to demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics, structure, and predictable motions of celestial bodies. 8-4.4 You will be able to explain the motions of Earth and the Moon and the effects of these motions as they orbit the Sun including day, year, phases of the moon, eclipses, and tides

  3. ViW’sBe sure to know and have these defined in your notebook at this end of this lesson • Revolve • Rotate • Axis • Counterclockwise • Elliptical orbit • Lunar • Moon Phases • New moon • Waxing crescent • First quarter • Waxing gibbous • Full moon • Waning gibbous • Third quarter • Waning crescent • Eclipses • Solar Eclipse • Lunar Eclipse • Tides • High Tide • Low Tide • Spring tides • Neap tides

  4. Main Idea • The Earth and the Moon both • Revolve • Rotate • These motions have effects that can be observed on Earth: • Moon phases • Eclipses • Tides

  5. Even the Earth looks like it has phases when your on the moon!

  6. Earth’s Rotation Causes Day & Night • A day is based on the 24 hours it takes Earth to rotate • Earth rotates on its axis counterclockwise from west to east • As a result the Sun appears to rise in the east and set in the west

  7. Earth’s Revolution Equals One Year • A year is based on the 365¼ days it takes Earth to revolve around the Sun • Earth revolves around the Sun in an elliptical orbit

  8. Lunar Movement • The moon revolves with Earth around the Sun as the moon is revolving around the Earth

  9. Month • The moon revolves around Earth in 29½ “Earth days” Notice the moon orbits the Earth on an angle. This is why we do not have eclipses 2X a month

  10. The Moon Rotates • Similarly to Earth, as the Moon revolves, it is rotating or spinning on its axis. • The rotation time for the Moon is a little over 27 Earth days

  11. You must study and be able to accurately name each of these moon phases.

  12. Phases of the Moon • As the position of the Moon changes as it revolves around Earth, the observations of the Moon from Earth are seen as phases • The causes of the phases of the Moon depends on how much of the sunlit side of the Moon faces Earth

  13. Waxing = right = returning Waning = left = leaving

  14. Wax on the Right side lit up Wax off Left side lit up

  15. Waxing or Waning?

  16. Draw and label each moon phase

  17. Moon Phases • New moon • Waxing crescent • First quarter • Waxing gibbous • Full moon • Waning gibbous • Third quarter • Waning crescent

  18. Where is the Sun?

  19. Can you name and explain the phases of the moon?

  20. Who is right?

  21. What would Leah and Enrico see?

  22. How Many Sides of the Moon Does the Earth See? • Because the Moon rotates and revolves in nearly the same amount of time, the same side of the Moon always faces Earth.

  23. Main Idea • The Earth and the Moon both revolve and rotate • These motions have effects that can be observed on Earth. • Day • Year • Moon phases • Eclipses • Tides

  24. An observer on the North Pole sees the Moon as shown below. What is the name of this Moon phase? A. New Moon B. First Quarter C. Full Moon D. Third Quarter

  25. When the Moon is in the position shown, how would the Moon look to an observer on the North Pole?

  26. Waxing and Waning

  27. Oreo Moon Phases!

  28. Can you?… • Explain the motions of Earth and the Moon and the effects of these motions as they orbit the sun • Construct cause and effect models of Earth and lunar movements • Interpret diagrams of the movements or the effects that result from the movement • Illustrate the phases of the moon in sequence • Identify periods of time related to Earth or lunar movements
