  1. Laboratory Experiment: Spectra of Salt Compounds Led by: Professor Cyril Giurgis

  2. Firework Colorants

  3. Expected Colors vs Actual Colors SrCl2– redCaCl– orangeNaCl- yellow CuCl2 – blue LiCl – whitish

  4. Unique, Characteristic, Distinctive • The important thing to know is that every atom of a particular element will have the same patternof lines all the time. • We say that the spectrum (colors given off) of an element is characteristic. • Useful because you can identify unknown elements by comparing them to others spectra

  5. Wave Scientists (Quantum Mechanics) • How these various spectral bands form is a matter of extreme importance because they were among the first experimental proofs of quantum mechanics done by Erwin Schrödinger. • First, because a light wave's frequency is proportional to its energy, (when one goes up the other goes up, when one goes down, the other goes down) he saw the different colored bands as representing discrete energy levels with nothing between them • that 'nothing-between-them' is the basis of the notion of quantum mechanics - sort of like integers have no fractions between them

  6. Websites to Help Answer The Conclusion Questions University of Manitoba atomic theory part two (you have to open the word document) • http://www.bing.com/search?q=university+of+manitoba+atomic+theory+part+two&qs=n&form=QBRE&pq=university+of+manitoba+atomic+theory+part+two&sc=0-0&sp=-1&sk=&cvid=a0d02d30abf94c30a3d0285cfaa486fa • http://www.science-projects.com/fes/FlameEmissions.htm • http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-an-emission-spectrum.htm
