  1. Seatrack Web, the HELCOM tool for oil spill prediction and identificationof illegal polluters- Mallversion 1.0 2009-09-23 MIMIC 5-6 Sep 2011 Cecilia Ambjörn

  2. Forecasting oil drift and the fate of oilto take the most efficient actionstoclean up shore lines and oil at sea - Minimize environmental effects- Tourism and people’s security - Knowledge of contaminated sea bed area in the long term Finding illegal pollutersbacktracking, AIS and satellite detections - Minimize illegal spills or - why not – zero spills

  3. Fully operational Fast, a few minutesUser-friendlyFree for governmental authorities responsible for oil spills At least 100 usersUnique in a global perspective Skilled team, partners and users (frequent feedback)State-of-the-art forecasting systems, 3D modelsUpdated information, latest forecasts

  4. Seatrack Web includes • AIS, AutomaticIdentification System (shipname, position, track, destination,…..) • 5 daysforecast • 30 daysbacktracking • Scenarios • Satellite data from EMSA, later • High resolution local applications

  5. Users of STW, snapshot 2011 • The Gulf of Finland Coast Guard, Helsinki, Finland • Finnish Environmental Institute, Helsinki, Finland • Estonian Environmental Inspectorate, Estonia • MRCC, Riga, Latvia, • MRCC, Klaipeda, Lithuania • Ministry of natural resources of the Russian Federation, Kaliningrad, Russia • Maritime Office in Szczecin, Slupsk and Gdynia, Poland • BSH, Germany • Admiral Danish Fleet, Denmark • The Swedish Coast Guard, Sweden

  6. Technical infrastructure Observations,HIROMB Ice, 73 rivers, 17 tidal comp Internet Web server - AIS data- Satellite data Observations, ECMWF HIRLAM Seatrack Web

  7. Area covered by Seatrack Web

  8. Oil processes included in the drift model • Initial spreading of the oil; gravity, viscosity, surface tension • Evaporation • Emulsification • Density • Stranding on sea bed and shore lines (amount) • Sedimentation • Dispersion/turbulence, horizontal and vertical

  9. Evaporation, oil at surface, dispersed, at sea bed, at shore and water content

  10. The applications increase……….. - Risk scenarios for sensitive areas - Drift of fish larvae- New marine reserves - Chemicals, objects - Environmental Impact Assessments, EIA - Training - Longterm effects on sea bed - Harmful algae blooms threatening shorelines

  11. MIMIC WP4, Milestone 1 Start –Aug 2011 - STW oil spill accident scenario based ecological risk assessment using the integrated ecological sensitivity maps (Estonian Marine Institute)- Start a calculation from a multi-cornered polygon

  12. MIMIC WP4, Milestone 2Sep-Dec 2011 - Oil spill accident scenario, using the integrated ecological sensitivity maps, autumn-winter season (together with Estonian Marine Institute)- Adapt STW to 1 nautical mile grid - Read currents and winds every hour for 48 hour forecast and select limited area for calculation and plot

  13. MIMIC WP4, Milestone 32012 - STW oil spill accident scenario, using integrated ecological sensitivity maps, winter-spring season (together with Estonian Marine Institute)- Select AIS search area manually on chart for Seatrack Web

  14. MIMIC WP4, Milestone 42012 - Select AIS tracks in specific direction of movement of vessels for Seatrack Web

  15. MIMIC WP4, Milestone 52012 - Analysis of seasonal variation of the oil spill incident related ecological risk (together with Estonian Marine Institute) - Display multiple calculation results/forecasts from different models on same chart for Seatrack Web

  16. MIMIC WP4, Milestone 62013 - Develop customised application and results for external systems in Seatrack Web

  17. MIMIC WP4, Milestone 72013 - Preparing 1-2 papers for peer reviewed journal… - Seatrack web response module to simulate deployment of booms in clean-up operations

  18. MIMIC WP4, Milestone 8Sep –Dec 2013 - Rebuild user interface using the latest web techniques for a more interactive and modern look, demo
