  4. Developed vs. Underdeveloped • Classified by economic development • DEVELOPED: Canada, USA, Germany • UNDERDEVELOPED: Brazil, China, Nigeria, Jamaica

  5. PROBLEM: • Only measures ECONOMIC development • India and China are highly developed CULTURALLY

  6. Developed vs. Developing • This idea reflects the dynamic nature of the world • South Korea and Singapore were developing 50 years ago… now they are developed.

  7. North – South • Most developed countries are farther north than developing countries.

  8. PROBLEMS • Countries such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina are southern countries but highly developed.

  9. USING THREE GROUPS • First/Second/Third World • Developed/Newly Industrialized/Developing

  10. First World Countries • Developed Capitalist countries • Canada, USA, Japan and UK

  11. Second World Countries • Former communist countries • Russia, Poland, and Hungary

  12. Third World Countries • Underdeveloped, developing or “South” countries • Brazil, China, Nigeria, Jamaica

  13. FIVE WORLD MODEL • First World • Second World • Third World • Fourth World • Fifth World

  14. First World • Highest level of economic and social development • Canada, Japan, France

  15. Second World • High social development, but less economically developed • Cuba, China, Russia

  16. Third World • Advanced in the transition of development, socially and economically • Brazil, Mexico, Malaysia

  17. Fourth World • Early stages of transition towards being developed. • Indonesia, India, Ecuador

  18. Fifth World • Little evidence of economic or social development • Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Haiti
