Academic Standing • You must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 (a C average) • If you fall below a 2.0 one semester you will be on Academic Probation; not in good standing • If you fall below a 2.0 for two consecutive semesters you will be eligible for academic dismissal. • Academic Probation and Dismissal appear on official MSMC transcripts

  4. Grading Policies:Grades computed in GPA • A 4.0 • A- 3.7 • B+ 3.3 • B 3.0 • B- 2.7 • C+ 2.3 • C 2.0 • C- 1.7 • D 1.0 • F 0.0 GPA Calculators available online: http://www.msmc.la.edu/pages/2799.asp

  5. Grading Policies: Not computed in GPA • AU Audit • CR Credit given; work C - or better. For field experience and supervised teaching offered by the Education and Psychology Departments, CR signifies B or better in quality. • I Incomplete • IP In Progress; deferred grading for graduate thesis, senior project, or undergraduate research work in progress • NC No Credit given; work of D or F in quality • NG No Grade received; issued by the Registrar pending receipt of the final grade • U Unauthorized withdrawal • W Withdrawn • X Courses taken for Associate degree credit only; not computed in the Baccalaureate degree

  6. Repetition of Courses • Only courses with a C-,D,F,NC may be repeated for a higher grade. • Repeating courses @ MSMC • Repeating courses @ another college

  7. Class Standings and Units • You will need a minimum number of 124 units to graduate with a baccalaureate degree; 45 of these units must be upper division units • Sophomores need 30 units, Juniors need 60 units, and Seniors need 90 units. • Lower division units can be identified by the following course numbering 0-99 and upper division units 100-199

Transfer Credit Policies • College courses taken while in high school are transferable so long as they weren’t used to complete high school requirements of any kind • While a student at the Mount you are only allowed to transfer units in during the summer. • Articulation agreements are available online (http://www.msmc.la.edu/academics/academic-advisement/articulation-agreements/)

  9. Transfer Credit Policies:Units and Grades • Only 9 units allowed • External courses must be taken for a letter grade, NOT credit/no credit • Must earn a minimum of ‘C-’ in order to transfer course to MSMC • Grades DO NOT transfer to MSMC, and are not computed in GPA

  10. Senior Residency Requirement = Mount units = External units Last 39 units applied toward MSMC degree. At least 30 of the units swimming in the pool must be MSMC units.

  11. Other Exciting Learning Opportunities • Interested in taking courses with UCLA? You must have a minimum 3.2 GPA and have a sophomore class standing. • Interested in Studying Abroad? You must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and have a junior class standing.

General Studies Requirements The following structure and content for the General Studies Curriculum applies to Bachelor degrees except that there is no modern language requirement for the Bachelor of Science degree. • Students may not take general studies courses on a credit/no-credit basis. • All courses used to fulfill General Studies requirements must be passed with a grade of C- or above, with the exception of Eng 1A, Eng 1B, and Eng 1C, which must be completed with a grade of C or better.

Written Communication GEEnglish • The pre-requisite for English 1A is a satisfactory score on the writing placement test or completion of English 7 • The minimum grade that can be earned in English 1A and 1B/C in order to fulfill the Written Communication GE requirement is a C (2.0). • Students completing ENG 5H must complete the course with a B (3.0) in order to complete the Written Comm GE. Students that earn less than a B, must complete English 1B or 1C to fulfill the Written Communication GE requirement. • English 1ABC/5H is the pre-requisite for upper division coursework.

  15. General Studies Curriculum • GS I: Communication Skills (minimum 7 units) A. Written (6 units) B. Oral (1-3 units) • GS II: Critical Thinking (minimum 3 units) • GS III:Arts and Sciences (minimum 21 units) At least one course must be taken in each of the following categories (A - G): A. Art or Music B. Literature C. History D. Natural and Physical Sciences E. Mathematics – BSN students do not have to complete this requirement. F. Social and Behavioral Sciences G. Contemporary Economics or Politics

  16. GS IV:Language & Culture Required for B. A. degree only. B.S. degree programs do not require a second language because of the additional science courses required by the related departments or outside professional accrediting agencies. All students are strongly encouraged to take a second modern language to enhance their personal and professional communication in our current multilingual society. Students may take placement exams offered by MSMC's Language and Culture Department in Spanish, French or Japanese to fulfill the requirement. Successful completion will waive the Modern Language Requirement but no units will be awarded. MATH exam scores valid for 2 years only. Next Placement Test session: October 8 Next Foreign Language Placement Test session: October 13

  17. GS V:Philosophy and Religious Studies (minimum 15 units* - must include 3 units of Ethics and 3 units of Philosophical Ideas.) A. Religious Studies (6-9 units) Ordinarily courses must be taken in at least two of the following areas: 1. Scripture 2. Christian Thought 3. Christian Ethics 4. Religion and Religions B. Philosophy (6-9 units) At least one course from among those listed under Philosophical Ideas must be taken. 1. Philosophical Ideas 2. Ethics 3. Other

  18. GS VI: Diversity (6) • GS VII: Quantitative Literacy (6 units) Baccalaureate students must take six (6) units of Quantitative Literacy (QL). The six units must come from either two QL2 courses OR one QL1 course and one QL2 course, but NOT two QL1 courses. A. QL1 B. QL2

  19. Customizing your Academic Program: Double majors • The two majors may be in the same or different degree programs. The student must determine the primary major and satisfy the general studies requirement for the degree of that major. The other major is considered the secondary major. • All requirements for both majors must be met, including all upper division work, foreign language, and any additional requirements. • The department chairpersons of both major areas must approve the student's completion of the requirements for the major. • A second major may be earned in the same academic area, but no more than 9 upper division units may satisfy requirements in both majors.

  20. Customizing your Academic Program: Adding a Minor • A minor should enrich a student's major, allow for specialization within a major, broaden a student's career options, and encourage exposure to other academic disciplines. • While most disciplines require 18 units to complete a minor, some departments require additional units. • In addition to the requirements for individual academic disciplines, a student must complete three upper division courses (9 units) for a minor that are not also being used to fulfill requirements for the major, general studies, or another minor. • The deadline for declaring a minor will be the end of the student's junior year.
