HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES HSNO Class 8 Corrosives
Class 8 - Corrosive • 8.1 Metallic Corrosive • 8.2 Skin Corrosive • 8.3 Eye Corrosive
Corrosiveness • Metallic Corrosives • Substances which corrode specified steel or aluminium surfaces at a rate exceeding 6.25 mm per year at a test temperature of 550C • Substances with pH </= 2 or 11.5 (guide only) • Substances corrosive only to non-metallic materials (& not biologically corrosive) are not above the HSNO threshold for corrosiveness
Biological Corrosiveness • Substances with pH </= 2 or >/= 11.5 • Substance causes destruction of the skin, after exposure for up to 4 hours, that is not fully reversed within 14 days • Substance causes irreversible damage to eyes
Corrosive Classifications • 8.1A - substances that are corrosive to metals
Biological Corrosiveness • 8.2A - corrosive to dermal tissue - damage within 1 hour of exposure of 3 minutes or less • 8.2B - corrosive to dermal tissue - damage within 14 days following exposure of greater than 3 minutes but less than 1 hour • 8.2C - corrosive to dermal tissue - damage within 14 days following exposure for greater than 1 hour
Corrosive to Eyes • 8.3A - substances that are corrosive to ocular tissue - destruction of ocular tissue following exposure that are not expected to reverse or not fully reverse within 21 days
Handling • Protect your eyes and skin!!! • Personal Protective Equipment • Know the hazards of the substances • Emergency preparedness - spill management, eye wash, showers • Storage - separate cupboard and labelled • secondary containment
