  4. USA: 450,000 deaths/year • About 3,500 died after terrorist attacs on September 11, 2001 • Each week about 9,000 killed by tobacco in USA = 3 times as on September 11, 2001

  5. Tobacco causes • 20 - 25% of CVD • 30% of all cancer • 75% of chronic pulmonary diseases • other diseases

  6. Cardiovascular diseases • increased fibrinogen • increased trombocytes, activated tromboc. • increased erythrocytes • increased leukocytes • double risk of diabetes • higher homocysteinaemia • negative impact on blood lipids • blood pressure, vasoconstriction

  7. Passive smoking • Recognized in 1981 • (more than 10% of non-smokers with lung cancer: partners of smokers) • also dogs and cats living in smokers household die sooner
