First hand smoke: One cigarette contains over 4,000 chemicals . Some of these chemicals can cause cancer. Here are two examples: • Ammonia (found in window cleaner) • Arsenic (found in rat poison)
Second-hand smoke is cigarette smoke that is inhaled by someone who is not smoking • Second-hand smoke can come from a burning cigarette, cigar or pipe or smoke exhaled by a smoker.
Can second-hand smoke affect someone’s health? Studies have clearly shown that people who are exposed on a regular basis to second-hand smoke are more likely to develop (and die from) heart problems, respiratory problems, and lung cancer.
Third-hand smokes come from the toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke that stays in the air even after a cigarette, cigar, or pipe is put out.Third-hand smoke can get trapped in hair, skin, fabric, carpet, furniture, and even toys.
To reduce your exposure to First, Second and Third hand smoke • Do not smoke cigarettes • Make sure your house and car are smoke-free • If you live with a smoker, encourage them to quit smoking and ask them not to smoke in the house or in the car • Cigarette Smoke belongs outside
