EVALUATION OF POTENTIAL FROST PROBLEMS IN PAVEMENT COMPONENTS FOR O’HARE RUNWAY 9L-27R • Prof. Barry DempseyDepartment of Civil and Environmental EngineeringUniversity of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign
Project Background • E-mail dated 10 March 2006 stated a concern that the P-152 Specification for Runway 9L-27R might allow the contractor to place non-reactive, potentially frost susceptible, and possibly non-plastic silty soils within the expected frost depth in the subgrade. • Question: How severe is the potential for frost problems? • Answer: Use the Enhanced Integrated Climatic Model (EICM) to evaluate potential problem. • The EICM has evolved over a 30 year time period and accurately predicts temperatures, freeze-thaw effects, and frost depth in multilayered pavement systems based on historical climatic data. The EICM is a major component in the New AASHTO Design Procedure and it is an accepted technology in pavement design. • EICM provides the time-temperature domain, freeze-thaw activity, and frost penetration in all of the pavement layers including the stabilized subgrade .
Project Status • Current status: Assembly of database is underway • Final report will describe frost penetration that can be expected in the Runway 9L-27R pavement system. • Final report in about one month
