  1. Basic Chemistry of Life CWP A solution is a homogeneous mixture An atom is the smallest part of an element. An element is a collection of like atoms. Covalent bonds are bonds that share electrons.

  2. The atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus. A solute is material dissolved nin a solution. A buffer is a substance that resists pH changes. A catalyst is a substance that influences a reaction but doesn’t become a part of it

  3. Water is an example of a polar compound Concentration is the ratio of solute to solid A compound is two or more elements combined chemically. A polymer is a chain of monomers. A proton is a positively charged particle in the nucleus.

  4. A chemical union of two pure substances to make a third is a chemical reaction. Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space, or has volume. A redox reaction is an oxidation-reduction reaction. Energy is the ability to change matter.

  5. The atomic mass is the number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus Electron is the atomic particle responsible for creating chemical bonds. A bond is the force holding atons to one another. A product is something produced in a chemical reaction.

  6. Ionic bonds are bonds created by the transfer of electrons. A monomer is a single unit of a polymer. An acid has a sour taste and provides hydrogen ions in water. pH is a scale indicating the hydrogen ion concentration.

  7. An enzyme is a protein catalyst. A reactant is a raw material for a chemical reaction. An electron is an electrically charged atom. A neutron is a nuclear particle without an electrical charge. A base turns litmus paper blue.
