  1. HP Virtual Tape Library (VTL) Appliance Powered by IPStor Ross Parker – Sales Director, Northern Europe

  2. Agenda • HP & FalconStor announcement • Background • What is the HP VTL appliance? • What benefits does it deliver? • Who are the target customers? • Who can I contact with an opportunity? • Questions

  3. HP & FalconStor Announcement • June 2004 – HP & FalconStor announced the Enterprise Backup Solution (EBS) Certification of VirtualTape Library (VTL) Software  • The HP StorageWorks EBS certification; • defines best practices and solutions for addressing backup and recovery issues facing storage administrators. • includes FalconStor’s VirtualTape Library (VTL) software with HP OpenView Storage Data Protector, HP ProLiant DL580 server, HP StorageWorks MSA1000 disk array and HP StorageWorks ESL E-series tape libraries • designed to deliver a complete, enterprise-class data protection solution.

  4. Disk Storage Used for Data Protection Source: Strategic Research, April 2002 $ Billion • The move to disk-based backup and recovery is occurring rapidly, growing to $5B in 2005 • “Time to Recovery” is the real business driver

  7. What is the HP VTL solution? • VTL - allows 3rd party backup software to perform backup/restore to a disk-based ‘virtual tape/library’ over high-speed FC or IP SANs. • Emulates a large number of industry standard tape libraries and tapes drives from varying major vendors • The base system has the ability to support up to: • 10 concurrent backup hosts • 50 concurrent backup or restore sessions • 50 virtual tape drives or 20 virtual tape libraries • 100 virtual tape cartridges • The VTL can import / export to physical tape libraries • The VTL solution can replicate data over IP to an independent site

  8. The HP VTL Solution Overview

  9. Customer Pain: Time Allocation Customers increasingly say they spend too much time doing storage operations per week: (in order of consumption) • Backup operations • Provisioning storage • Managing tape libraries • Managing storage networks • Volume and file management • Archiving/HSM • Capacity planning • Disaster recovery management/testing • Monitor storage array failures

  10. Customer IT Challenges • Reliability Issues • Experiencing backup/restore failures due to robotic failure or media error • Performance Issues • Backup window is shrinking • the fastest tape drive (LTO) can perform backup @ 30 MB/s (with optimal compression) • Restore is MUCH too slow (less than half the speed of backup) • Manageability/Staffing Issues • Difficult to partition and share large tape libraries • Can not centrally manage backup resources (Tape Drives/Libraries) • Need to provision virtualised tape drive/library to Backup Server over FC or IP SAN • Availability Issues • Need to maximize operating efficiency without compromising the investment in existing backup software and policy

  11. VTL ApplianceCustomer/Business Benefits • Reliability • Eliminates robotic failure or media error • Active-Active cluster/disk mirroring delivers highest levels of fault tolerance • Performance • Achieves backup/restore speeds in excess of 100 MB/s • Manageability • Java-based Management Console provides centralized management • Provisions Virtual Tape Drive/Library over FC or IP SAN • Availability • Re-use/leverage existing backup device • Eliminates need to reconfigure the existing backup software/policy • Virtual Tape Drive/Library can be accessed over any IP network

  12. Example of Target Customers • Problems meeting the backup window • Looking for faster restore’s for file & applications • Experienced excessive tape media, drive and robotic failures • Need to add tape drives as required • Want off-site tape vaulting • Require a solution that fits with the existing infrastructure • Interested in the overall benefits of D2D2T backup

  13. Who to contact? • InTechnology HP Account Manager • FalconStor Account Managers (Ross Parker / Patrick Adams) • HP Account Manager • HP Whitepaper on VTL • Information on websites • http://hp.com/go/ebs • http://www.falconstor.com/HPEBSCertification.asp
