Dale’s cone of Learning Exxperiences • Developed by Edgar Dale in 1946 • Intended to describe various learning experiences • Shows progression of experiences from most concrete to most abstract
Some Techniques... • Active Lectures • Capture student’s attention in the first 10 minutes • Brainstorm about a topic • Overview with preliminary objectives using headings • Vary pitch, intensity and timbre of voice, move about, gesture • Relate material to students’ interests • Modified Lectures • Feedback lecture • Two 20-minute lectures separated by small group work, work to respond to questions on the lecture • Guided lecture • Objectives of the lectures are given • Students listen without writing for 20 minutes, try to identify major concepts, remember supporting data • Spend 5 minutes recording all they remember • Responsive lecture • Periodically devote one class to answer student-generated questions • Students may submit questions before a responsive lecture • Students are asked to provide explanation for why they think the question is important
Some Techniques Contd... • Guided Inquiry/POGIL • Class Discussions • Explain the value of discussion & students’ participation • Plan key questions while preparing lecture, adapt questions to students’ level/ability • Ask questions logically and sequentially, give students time to think, encourage questions from them • Case Studies • Facilitate multidisciplinary teaching, foster critical thinking skills • Establish a context for a problem and identify major decisions • Help students to see that there may be no single right or wrong answer • Group Work/Cooperative Learning • Debates, Role-plays • working in small groups to interact and learn from each other • Enhances learning, conflict management & communication skills
Some Techniques Contd... • Peer Teaching/Learning • In pairs, teach each other; each partner alternates in the role of teacher and student • Students prepare for class by reading; in class, randomly assigned pairs ask questions of each other and provide feedback • Peers help each other in reading and writing assignments • Tasks/Exercises • Student participation is central focus • Teacher introduces the concept, give tasks to students have clear understanding • Learning by Doing, Group work, Peer teaching are such techniques • Visits/Visitors • Visiting industries & people with experience worth sharing with students • Guest talks • Mind Maps
Mind Maps Standards + Meaning + Patterns = Greater Learning
