  4. History of the BBFC • Established in 1912. • In the years around WW2, American films were not rated as strictly as British films, as they were seen as a foreign culture. • Named changed from ‘British Board of Film Censors’ to ‘British Board of Film Classification’ in 1984.

  5. Famous ‘Banned’ films by the BBFC • In 1979, ‘Monty Python’s Life of Brian’ was banned in the UK due to its controversial blasphemous content. Since attitudes have relaxed, it is now available uncut in the UK. • Although famously believed to have been banned, ‘The Exorcist’ has consistently been passed at an uncut 18 rating by the BBFC since its release, but was initially not released on home video.
