  4. C let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. L Christ was wounded for our transgressions. C He was bruised for our iniquities. L From the rising of the sun to its setting, C the name of the Lord is to be praised. C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

  5. Psalm 133 • Behold, how good and pleasant it is    when brothers dwell in unity!2 It is like the precious oil on the head,    running down on the beard,on the beard of Aaron,    running down on the collar of his robes!3 It is like the dew of Hermon,    which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the Lord has commanded the blessing, life for evermore.

  6. Collect for the Word L Blessed Lord, You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn, and take them to heart that, by the patience and comfort of Your holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives on reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

  8. Readings From Holy Scripture

  9. Genesis 4:3-11 3 In the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4 and Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, 5 but for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry, and his face fell. 6 The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? 7 If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”

  10. 8 Cain spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. 9 Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?” 10 And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground.

  11. Revelation 12:7-12 7Now war arose in heaven, Michael and his angels fighting against the dragon. And the dragon and his angels fought back, 8 but he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.9 And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world—he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him. 10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven, saying, “Now the salvation and the power and the kingdom of our God and the authority of his Christ have come, for the accuser of our brothers has been thrown down, who accuses them day and night before our God.

  12. 11 And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death. 12 Therefore, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them! But woe to you, O earth and sea, for the devil has come down to you in great wrath, because he knows that his time is short!”

  24. The Rest of the Family

  25. Families grow. They Extend in a triangular function. • Husband-wife = 1 relationship • Husband-wife-child=3 relationships • Husband-wife-2 children=6 relationships • …….. • In my nuclear family (4 kids) there are 15 relationships • Husband-wife-12 kids=105 relationships!! • Think of all the squabbles! • Think also of the potential close family bonds!! • Multiple vocations within a family unit…enough to keep us busy for a lifetime (married or single)

  26. THE HOUSEHOLD • All members of the nation of Israel considered themselves related to each other…all descendants of Abraham. • Next, they were members of one of the 12 tribes • Then part of a clan within that tribe • Finally, the household was the smallest unit • Jesus was of the tribe of Judah, house of David • We have narrowed it down considerably in America • Household not usually include grandparents, uncles, cousins, we each have our own “house” • To rebuild the family it may help to recover this idea of household – the permanent bond we have with the “extended” family – Legacy passed on from Grandfather • 1 Timothy 5:8, Acts 16:15, 1 Cor. 1:16

  27. GRANDPARENTS • Nowadays this is a vocation viewed as having all the benefits with none of the responsibility (Spoil ‘em and return ‘em) • They have genuine authority, not to raise the grandkids but as head of the extended family • Lev. 19:32 • 1 Timothy 5:1 • Exodus 29:4-6 • A persons embrace of a false religion will certainly affect their children • The habit of not attending church, or making it secondary out of apathy can be passed down to grandchildren. • Likewise having a firm conviction of what’s important – righteousness and the love of God can be passed down. Ps. 103:7

  28. By remaining in their vocations as parents and grandparents, they continue to model and influence as long as they live – even after they die. Strong, loving, Christian families tend to beget strong, loving, Christian families. Proverbs 17:6 – Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers. For those who have gone astray, while alive there is always time to repent and become a child of God once more and hope to mitigate the effects of their sin on their children.

  29. BROTHERS & SISTERS • Siblings, despite their closeness (or because of it) sometimes have trouble getting along • Cain and Abel (Gen. 4) • Joseph and his brothers (Gen. 25,27) • They often compete against one another for the affection of their parents…this can carry on into adulthood and become a family-destroying game • Winner – prideful and unloving • Loser – bitter and hostile – often to whole family • Parents must remember not to show favoritism – if giving a coat of many colors, give something just as good to rest

  30. What is the role of the sibling • Look to Cain & Abel – Abeloffered blood sacrifice, Caindid not – Cainbecame jealous and killed Abel- for his sacrifice was accepted – showing that the fruit of our labor is not sufficient to make us right with God – it takes a blood sacrifice – John 1:29 – the Lamb of God, takes away sin • Gen. 4:9 – Am I my brother’s keeper? • Siblings are to “keep” each other. • Since they have the same calling, they are to watch over, guard, protect…have each other’s backs, help, maintain that relationship and family at almost any cost. • To be a “keeper” requires forgiveness, keeping the bond despite any wrongs that may have happened. • They are each other’s flesh and blood, they are to serve the greater good of the family and each member. • Gen. 33:4 Gen. 45 (Joseph and his brothers

  31. The older brother of the prodigal son – Luke 15 • Like Cain – insisted on his own righteousness, twisted into anger, jealousy and hatred • The father shows grace, giving him his presence and possessions • Romans 8:29 – Jesus is the “firstborn among many brothers” • Jesus is our brother, our keeper and we keep him by faith • Matthew 18:21-22 • Jesus is the source of our forgiveness for our brothers

  32. The Church is a household of faith • Romans 12:10 • 1 Peter 5:8-9 • Our unity with fellow Christians comes from our unity with Christ and whatever we do to our fellow brothers/sisters in Christ, we do to Christ (Matt. 25:40) • Relationships we’ve discussed • Christ – Church shows us marriage • Heavenly Father shows us parenthood • Jesus - Father shows us childhood • The Church/household of faith underlies all human households

  33. Matthew 12:46-50 • Matthew 19:28-30 • Luke 14:25-27 • In earliest days of Christianity people had to leave their household to cling to Christ • Family values must not trump Christ and our relationship with him. Mark 10:29-30 • The Church will be your family • But happy are those households whose members are also members of the household of faith, whose grandparents, parents, brothers/sisters are also brothers/sisters in Christ

C Amen.

  40. Confession and Absolution

  41. P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

  42. C O almighty God, merciful Father, I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

  43. P God be merciful to you and strengthen your faith. C Amen. P Do you believe that the forgiveness I speak is not my forgiveness but God’s? C Yes. P Let it be done for you as you believe.

  44. P In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen.

  45. Lord's Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

  46. The Words of Our Lord P Our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

  47. The Words of Our Lord P In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

  48. Pax Domini P The peace of the Lord be with you always. C Amen.

  49. Agnus Dei C O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, You take the sin of the world away; O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, Have mercy on us, Lord, we pray. O Jesus Christ, true Lamb of God, You take the sin of the world away; Have mercy on us, Jesus Christ, And grant us peace, O Lord, we pray.
