KEYING + STOP MOTION ASSIGNMENT! • In small groups, you are going to create a VERY short film or just a sequence that incorporates both chromakeying and stop motion animationin every (required) shot. (You may have other shots in addition to the 3 that do not combine both—ex. cutaways, close-ups of humans, etc.)
KEYING + STOP MOTION ASSIGNMENT! Each student in your group is responsible for working on 1 or2 shots. You’ll be doing the stop motion in iStopmotion, the keying in After Effects, and the editing in Premiere.
KEYING + STOP MOTION ASSIGNMENT! Plan to bring all items you’ll need to be stop-motion animated—you can think toys, action figures, Barbies, vehicles, Legos, etc. Also plan how the shots will edit together; think about matching action, the 180 rule, and the 30% rule. Start creating any backgrounds that you might need too.
KEYING + STOP MOTION ASSIGNMENT! TIPS: • Don’t go overboard—needs to be completely finished in 3 days. Plan for each shot to take a long time! • Have some people work on backgrounds and keying and editing and sound effects while others continue with stop motion. • It can be abstract, repetitive, etc. but be creative!

KEYING + STOP MOTION ASSIGNMENT! CREATIVITY / EDITING ____ / 20 Shots cut together well Sequence is creative and interesting Innovative uses of both keying and stop-motion Sound effects and audio will be used STOP MOTION ____ / 20 Is fluid, varied, and interesting Works well with keyed footage KEYING ____ / 10 Is sharp and clean Works well with stop-motion animation TEAMWORK____ / 10 Group members work equally Shots are equally strong
TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT • You are going to • Research and experiment with a technique or effect • Create example videos (1 per person) • Lead a demonstration / tutorial –no more than 10 minutes—for the class
TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT • Don’t be overly complex—10 minute maximum • Plan how you’ll explain to the class • Split duties equally between members • Choose something you think would benefit class as you prepare for final projects
TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT • EXAMPLE VIDEO(S)—1 per person to show variety of applications of effect = 25 points • PRESENTATION—is clear & effective, not overly complex = 35 points • TEAMWORK—shared equally (these points will go to presentation if you work alone) = 15 points
WHAT IS THE FINAL PROJECT? • Whatever you want… as long as… • It represents a challenge for you—new techniques used / existing skills expanded on & refined. • It is a project that will take at least 3 weeks of hard work to finish (with participation points for each week) • It showcases several different types of techniques and skills that make it interesting and sophisticated. • I approve a short synopsis of your idea, giving specific details about your story, techniques, types of animation, etc. in no specific format, but at least 7 sentences (and will be worth 25 points).
IDEAS? • A narrative cartoon with different shots/angles/characters • A short film that features special effects like motion tracking, explosions, chroma-keying, 3D titling, CC effects, particle systems, etc. • Kinetic typography • A movie trailer for a fake, animated or live action movie that features tons of different techniques. • Add animation, special effects, text, kinetic typography to “found footage”—old videos found online, etc. to reimagine them. • Something that can be applied to another class, a job, a resume, animations used for SVTV, etc.
GRADING • 200 points! • More information to follow • 25 point summary due ______________
The next few days—TUTORIALS! • Particle systems & particle playground • Scatterize and ball action • Sphere • Keyframing glue gun and write—on • Rotoscoping • Lightning & beam • Various generate effects • More things… • Brush up on motion blur, adjustment layers, etc.
