Government • Purpose of a government is to make laws that run a country • Governments benefit people because they see to things that everyone uses • Example:roads, military
Types of Government • There are 5 main types of government that we have discussed so far in this class. • We will focus on learning how these governments affect the people who live in them.
Governments: Democracy • Democracy—people vote • 2 types of Democracy • Representative—people elect representatives to make laws for them. • Direct—people vote on laws directly • Many democracies limit who can vote based on age, race, religion, gender, etc.
Governments: Democracy • Impact of Democracy on citizens • Most feel involved in the choices their country makes. • Government less likely to take advantage of people voting • In some countries where the voting is greatly limited, the government can still take advantage of the people who don’t get to vote.
Governments: Democracy • After the American Democracy was so successful, many other countries have copied our form of government
Governments: Oligarchy • Oligarchy is when a small group of people rule • This group usually has a lot of power over the rest of the people. • Tend not to last long, because the powerful people fight among themselves for who will be most powerful.
Governments: Monarchy • Monarchy is a government where a country has a king and a queen • You get to be the leader by being born into the family • If the family doesn’t have any children (heirs) it passes to close relatives like cousins or brothers and sisters.
Governments: Monarchy • With the King and Queen is usually a group of people called nobles. • Nobles are rich, normally own a lot of land, and also pass down their property and titles to their children
Governments: Monarchy • Since the nobles own most of the land, and normally fight in the army, the king and queen have to keep them happy • Sometimes nobles will rebel and if enough of them join together, they can overthrow the king and pick a new one
Governments: Monarchy • Class system • In a Monarchy, the King and nobles are the upper class. • There is a small group of middle class workers, usually skilled workers like blacksmiths and artists • There is a very large lower class. Most of these people work on the nobles’ lands for just enough money or food to live.
Governments: Dictatorship • In a dictatorship, one person has complete control of the government • He may choose to allow certain people to be close to him and help him run the government, but they get all their power from him.
Governments: Dictatorship • Dictators hold on to power by scaring people and controlling the army • To get the people in the army to go along with what they are doing, dictators often give them special benefits and more money than the rest of the people in the country
Governments: Dictatorship • Dictators can do anything they want in their countries • They have unlimited money, power, and control over everyone else’s lives.
Governments: Communism • Communism was first talked about in the 1800’s by a man name Karl Marx • Marx believed that government could create a perfect world where everyone was equal.
Governments: Communism • To create his perfect world, Marx believes that everyone should work hard to help everyone in the country • The problem is that often times, the people making decisions don’t work very hard, and since they get to make decisions, they also take more money than the rest of the people.
Governments: Communism • In many communist countries, the government picks what the people do, how much money they get, and how they live • Communist countries also use fear and the army to control the rest of the people.
Governments: Propoganda • Any time a government is unpopular, they may use Propoganda. • Propoganda is usually something that is only half true, or not true at all, that makes people believe something • For example: A communist country may use propoganda and tell everyone in their country that people living in democracies don’t care about anyone else and everyone in a democracy is starving except for the really rich people.
Governments: Propoganda • Propoganda works really well when the government controls the schools • This is because they can teach it to the children as though it is a fact
GROUP WORK • Your group will create a country with it’s own laws based on one of the 5 government types • Your Assignment today is to create a country name, and a flag. • Tomorrow, you will begin to write the laws for your country. The teacher will read your laws, and will give each group new challenges that they need to make laws to deal with.
Group Work Continued • Once a week, you will meet with your group to make laws based on the challenge given to you by your leader (teacher). • You will be judged by the leader how well you are running the country. The best run country in each class by the end of the quarter will win a prize.
