Explore Earth's atmosphere, a thin blanket of air surrounding our planet, composed of gas particles including nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor. Learn about air pressure and the different layers of the atmosphere, including the troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, and thermosphere.

Earth’s Atmosphere p. D6-9
Atmosphere • The layer of air around Earth • Can be compared to a very thin blanket, surrounding our planet • Made up of billions of gas particles • These include nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, and water vapor
Air Pressure • All the particles of air pressing down are called “air pressure”. • This pressure changes as you move up or down in the atmosphere. • Higher up-lower pressure
Layers of Atmosphere • Troposphere-where we live and where most weather happens • Stratosphere-contains most of the ozone that protects us from the sun’s rays • Mesosphere-coldest layer • Thermosphere-hot outer layer
