Eco-Friendly Notes ~ 01.04.2010 Ecology - The branch of biology dealing with the relationships of organisms with their environment and with each other. Ecological Relationship - the relationship between organisms in an ecosystem, with each other, and the ecosystem itself with other ecosystems.
Groupwork ~ 20 minutes • Break up into 6 groups and search the textbook, and the web to define and find 2 examples of each type of ecological relationship listed below. You will be sharing your findings with the class. Stay focused and stay with your group – this will help eliminate repeat examples. Everyone should be writing everything in their own journal, as this will be considered part of your notes. • predation • mutualism • commensalism • parasitism
Definitions Bell 1/2 • Predation – one organism captures/feeds off another ex. Archer fish v insects • Mutualism – both organisms benefit ex: hummingbird and flower • Commensalism - one organism benefits, the other is unaffected ex: army ants & birds OR Mr. Links kicking Mushrooms • Parasitism – long term benefits for one organism and adverse affects for the other ex: leech and animal
