  1. Interaction and Interdependence Eco-Prompt ~ 01.04.2010 • What factors impact ecosystems? Make a list and provide examples of how these factors effect an ecosystem. • Competition • Niche • Nutrients • Space • Climate • http://lgfl.skoool.co.uk/viewdetails_ks3.aspx?id=581 • http://lgfl.skoool.co.uk/viewdetails_ks3.aspx?id=439

  2. Eco-Friendly Notes ~ 01.04.2010 Ecology - The branch of biology dealing with the relationships of organisms with their environment and with each other. Ecological Relationship - the relationship between organisms in an ecosystem, with each other, and the ecosystem itself with other ecosystems.

  3. Groupwork ~ 20 minutes • Break up into 6 groups and search the textbook, and the web to define and find 2 examples of each type of ecological relationship listed below. You will be sharing your findings with the class. Stay focused and stay with your group – this will help eliminate repeat examples. Everyone should be writing everything in their own journal, as this will be considered part of your notes. • predation • mutualism • commensalism • parasitism

  4. Definitions Bell 1/2 • Predation – one organism captures/feeds off another ex. Archer fish v insects • Mutualism – both organisms benefit ex: hummingbird and flower • Commensalism - one organism benefits, the other is unaffected ex: army ants & birds OR Mr. Links kicking Mushrooms • Parasitism – long term benefits for one organism and adverse affects for the other ex: leech and animal

  5. Definitions Bell 5/6 • Predation – predator prey relationship ex: Coyote and rabbit • Mutualism – both organisms benefit ex: bees and flowers • Commensalism - one organism benefits one is unaffected ex: barnacles and whales • Parasitism – one organism benefits at the cost of the other ex: heartworms and dogs

  6. Definitions Bell 7/8 • Predation – when an animal hunts after another for food ex: wolf and rabbit • Mutualism – both organisms involved benefit ex: clown fish and sea anemone • Commensalism - when one organism benefits and the other is not affected ex: shark and lamprey • Parasitism – one organism benefits and the other is harmed in some way ex: lice and humans

  7. Assignment / Possible H.W. • Read the Essay on page 656 titled: Interdependence Involves Limiting Factors and Carrying Capacity • Develop a definition that makes sense to you for the following terms… • Limiting factor • Carrying capacity • Next – read “The Mystery” on page 632. • Develop a hypothesis as to how these concepts may have played a role on Easter Island. – there are no wrong answers here…. You must present a possible scenario in which these concepts could apply. (1 paragraph minimum) • Turn in your definitions and response.
