  2. Lakes & Ponds • Lakes and ponds are only 3% of the Earth’s surface. • They are freshwater habitats that are located all over the world. • The world’s largest lake is Lake Superior in North America. • They are being more and more threatened by human demands of freshwater.

  3. Lakes & Ponds They are found in all types of environments and on all continents.

  4. Climate • The climate doesn’t stay the same, it changes depending the time. • Water temperatures in lakes and ponds during summer months differ in layers. • Top Layer - stays warm at 65-75 degrees • Middle Layer - Drops to 46-65 degrees • Bottom Layer - It’s the coldest at 39-45 degrees

  5. Abiotic Factors • Water • Light • Oxygen • pH • Temperature • Wind • Oil

  6. Human Impacts • Lakes and ponds supply humans with drinking water and water for crop growing. • We fish in ponds and we eat the fish we catch, limiting the population of fish. • Freshwater biomes like these have suffered mainly from pollution from humans. • People throw trash in ponds and lakes.

  7. Producers • Lilly Pads- They have air spaces in their stems to support them when under water. • Algae- They adapt by using photosynthesis. • There are many aquatic plants that are rooted into the sand to adapt to the biome.

  8. Consumers • Shell cracker- They adapt to warm, protected bodies of water with little or no current. They stay at the bottom of the lake or pond they live in which has an abundance of cover from aquatic plants or submerged trees. • Frogs- adapt by eating the bugs around the pond. • Duck- They know their surroundings and what to be afraid of and they have webbed feet for swimming and a beak for eating certain things.

  9. Food Web

  10. Lakes & Ponds • The value of lakes and ponds are sometimes unrecognized. We don’t realize how important freshwater biomes are to humans. They provide water all the time and food sometimes. We don’t realize how important lakes and ponds really are so some people throw trash down harming the biome and it is unsanitary to eat or drink anything from it.
