Terms • Transgender: Identified with a gender other than their biological one. • Transvestite: A person, typically male, who derives pleasure from dressing in clothes appropriate for the opposite sex. • Transsexual: A person born with the physical characteristics of one sex who emotionally and psychologically feel that they belong to the opposite sex.
History • 1868- The Fourteenth Amendment is ratified giving equal protection and due process to all persons. • 1923- The word Transvestite was coined. • 1949- The use of hormone therapy in the treatment of transsexual patients is pioneered.
History • 1959- Transgender individuals denied marriage licenses. • 1969- The Stonewall Riots. • 1969- First private practice for gender reassignment. • 1976- Transsexual persons are given the right to marry. • 1993- Minnesota becomes the first state to ban employment discrimination based on gender identity.
History • 1993- In the same year, transman Brandon Teena is raped and murdered.
History • 1999- Texas refuses to issue marriage licenses to opposite sex-couples in which one partner is transsexual. • 2001- Kansas refuses to allow transwoman to inherit her husband’s property, claiming her marriage was was invalid. • 2007- Gender identity protections are controversially stripped for the 2007 version of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act. • 2009- Barack Obama signs legislation associated with transgender issues.
Transgender Issues • 2-5% of the population are transgender. • 20% of all murders and about 40% of all police-initiated violence were found to be associated with transgender individuals and issues. • Some doctors are prescribing children and teens hormone therapy at the request of their parents. • Some people feel that it is impossible to be transgender,the gender you are born is what you are.
Laws In The United States • 13 States and Washington D.C. have specific laws that protect against transgender explicit non-discrimination. • Minnesota’s current anti-discrimination laws include prohibiting discrimination (such as harassment based on sexual orientation) and is defined to include transgender, in education. • 5 States even have laws that includes transgender rights in restrooms and locker rooms. • 15 States have laws to prevent the bullying and harassment of transgender individuals.
