  2. Conquering & Ruling a Vast Empire Ganghis Khan 1161-1227 Universal Ruler: Golden Horde • Horse culture- 105,000(1206) organized into the decimal system, built up from squads of 10 called arbat. Famous for horse archers. • Advanced superior technology, siege warfare, and explosives. • Rewarded loyal soldiers. • Expanded from the Pacific ocean to the Caspian sea collecting fractured empires like the Muslims and marrying princesses off. • Established Khanbaliq (Beijing) 1294

Mongols effects on China • Established the Yuan Dynasty- Restored Peace. • Improved transportation-extended the grand canal, expanded the postal system • Increased contact and trade Europe, India & Persia. • Exempted the poor and the clergy from taxes. • Yassa-Codified everything relating to everyday life & political affairs. • Forbid the selling of women, theft of property, & fighting between Mongols. • Decreed religious freedom & supported domestic and international. Encouraged literacy & script.

  4. Decline of Mongols • Weak successors • Heavy taxes • Mongol discrimination against the Chinese led the fall of the Yuan dynasty. • Corruption of government court. • Over spending on foreign conquest. • Internal instability.

  5. Extension • Either defend or accuse Genghis Khan of war crimes towards china. List any possible witnesses for or against your case on Genghis Khan.
