Quesada, PhD 1Department of Industrial Engineering, University of Louisville; 2Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; 3School of Nursing, University of Louisville; 4Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Louisville OBJECTIVE • The objective of this study is to quantify and compare bilateral kinematics and kinetics during Sit-To-Stand • and Stand-To-Sit in healthy subjects and unilateral knee osteoarthritis patients INTRODUCTION METHODS • SitTS and StandTS at self-selected pace from an armless & backless bench • 8 camera motion tracking system, EvART 7.0, OrthoTrack 6.2.4 (Motion Analysis Corp.) • SitTS and StandTS phases determined by trunk vertical velocity • The ability to rise from a seated position (sit-to-stand; SitTS) and sit from a standing position (stand-to-sit; StandTS) is essential • Evaluations of SitTS and StandTS among healthy individuals and patients with unilateral knee osteoarthritis (UKOA) are limited • Healthy subjects (n=12) • Three trials each with the dominant & non-dominant leg on the force plate (Bertec Corp.) • Symmetry Index = nondominant/dominant • UKOA patients (n=11) • Three trials with the affected leg & one trial with the non-affected leg on the force plate • Symmetry Index = affected/non-affected • Kinematic analysis: sagittal plane hip and knee angle maximum values and ranges of motion (ROM) • Kinetic analysis: peak vertical ground reaction forces (VGRF) and flexion moments of the hip and knee RESULTS & DISCUSSION < *Significant difference between A and NA limbs • No statistically significant differences between parameters for the ND and D lower extremities among healthy individuals during SitTS and StandTS • All symmetry index values for UKOA patients during SitTS and StandTS were less than 1 : • minimize lower extremity motion in their A limb and rely more on their NA limb • significant differences for hip and knee flexion ROM, VGRF, and peak knee moment (p<0.05) • The current study is the first to report such findings during StandTS and previous studies have found similar results during SitTS [3-6] CONCLUSIONS Healthy subjects did not display any bilateral differences in kinematics and kinetics of the lower extremities during SitTS or StandTS while individuals with UKOA exhibited significant asymmetry in hip flexion ROM, VGRF, and knee flexion ROM and moments **This research was approved by the University of Louisville Institutional Review Board (# 215.03 & 07.0158)**
