Taking Care of CarersProject • Dementia: Major public health and social challenge • Affecting 35 million persons worldwide • Forecast: 70 million in 2030 and 115 million in 2050 • Europe: 7 million • Increasing demand of dedicated healthcare services • Recognition of the decisive role of informal carers and residential care services
Taking Care of CarersProject (2009-2013) • Main Objectives: - Promote specialized answers to support the informal caregivers of patients with Alzheimer's dementia; - Develop integrative social and health services that are sensitive to the needs of informal caregivers;

Background • The Region’s Social and Health situation (diagnosis) • Social: Older individuals as a vulnerable group, lacking specific support in several areas. • Health: Lack of mental health services for this population and their caregivers, particularly for dementia and stroke situations • Need of Integrated Community Support

Taking Care of CarersProject (2009-2013) • This project was based in sustainability and continuity of the services: psycheducational groups and mutual support groups still ongoing in each municipality – participation of the partners and stakeholders The success, impact and importance of this project, both in terms of informal caregivers and the community, are the result of the commitment and complementarity actions and resources from the different partners and stakeholders involved. Taking Care of CarersProject - Results • Economic Analysis (preliminary results) • Costs of Dementia Care Services: 4000€ - 12.000€ / per year • Reduction of costs based on the decrease of hospital care demand • 10 – 30% positive impact (less 1.500€ - 4.000€)
