Fertilization • The panda reproduces sexually • The panda carries it’s babies in it’s womb so it’s internal • The panda has a delay before the embryo implantation (before it becomes pregnant)
Offspring • Normally has 2 offspring • The cubs are usually 5 oz.
Incubation Period • Lasts 4-5 months • Reproduces every 2 years
Mating Rituals • The females will use scent-marking (rubbing bums against trees and rocks) to attract mates • Male pandas will compete for the female • The female only wants to have a baby for 2-5 days so the male will have to wait to “make his move”
Maturity • The female panda reaches maturity between the ages of 4-10 years • But will only be able to mate 12-25 days in between mid-March and mid-May
Parenting • The males leave after mating • The mother will only mother one of her two cubs the other she will abandon • Carries cub everywhere for the first few weeks • The cub will stay with the mother for 18 months
Life Span • In the zoo panda’s live to about 30 years • In the wild they live to an estimated less than 20 years!
Habitat • Mainly in these Chinese Provinces: • The south of Gansu Province • Sichuan Province mountains • Qin Ling Mountains of Shaanxi Province • As well as zoos and nature reserves Red parts are where pandas live
Interesting Facts! • A grown panda will need to eat 28 lbs. of bamboo before it is full • The panda is listed in the endangered species list the are approximately 1,590 pandas left in the wild due to loss of habitat.
