Making Meaning Through Art Using Art as a Tool to Explore Language Presented by JenayKiddoo
Key Concept #1 • Integrating art in the curriculum involves multiple academic, linguistic, social and emotional skills that are taught and reinforced. • Problem Solving • Story telling • Communicating ideas • Working together • Asking/Answering questions • Self expression
Key Concept #2 • There are four “stages” of Arts Integration: • Thinking • Doing • Talking • Writing
Key Concept #3 • At each stage in arts integration, teachers use strategies to encourage student engagement in the creative process, making connections, developing oral language and participating in academic discourse.
The Creative Process Stage 1: Thinking “Close your eyes and listen as I guide you through a visualization that will serve as the inspiration for the art you are about to create.”
The Creative Process Stage 2: Doing Using the materials at your table, create your tree. Pay attention to the shape, texture, color. Will you use symbols, abstract images, or geometric shapes?
The Creative Process Stage 2: Doing • “Say Something” • Non-judgmental language • Validate the creative impulse • Be open to the results • Ask reflective questions
The Creative Process Stage 3: Talking Using open ended questions and prompts allows students to think critically about the artistic choices they made and to critique the artwork of their peers.
The Creative Process • Developing Oral Lanuage • Think, Pair, Share • Q&A frames • Building on the discussion • Asking each other questions • Connect the art to other curricular areas
The Creative Process Stage 4: Writing Using the 4 Process questions you can take your students through a quick and effective way to reflect on the activity and write about what they did and, more importantly, learned.
The Creative Process Stage 4: Writing Process Questions What did you do? What materials did you use? What did you learn? How did you feel?
Reflection/Wrap up • What questions do you have? • How will you use these strategies in your classroom with your ELs? • Please fill out the evaluation before you leave.
