Art, Beauty, and Meaning Chris Fey
Definition of Art From Templates Me • Should be an intentional creative creation resorting from human effort that is an emotional reflection of a persons soul (Method to madness) • (Tolstoys use of infects-spreads emotion) • I agree with the artist with a couple of exceptions: • Skill and technique need to be present • Should provoke intellectual thought thus; • A majority of contemporary art is not art (simple lines and colors do not cut it)
Definition of Beauty Artist Me • Subjective; An internal emotion that is externalized through the painting and exists in the eye of the beholder; causes a connection between painter and viewer • Many interviewed said beauty can not be defined or to hard to explain • Agreed on artist confusion on this term • ObjectiveSubjective Mixed Theory • Beauty needs to be seen in one of two ways: • Meaning -(not just happiness but sadness) beauty in what the heart sees and/or • Aesthetics-beauty in what the eye sees
Does Art Have To Be Beautiful? Artist Me • Majority: Art does NOT have to be beautiful as long as the piece evokes an emotional response • I agree that it does not have to be beautiful but rather creates a connection between viewer and creator and somehow formulate an emotion
Evaluation of At The Moulin Rouge Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec
Elements of Art • Texture: looks like it was painted 10 minutes before you look at it • Form: Form can easily be seen by the banister and creates a 3-D appearance • Shape: everything else but chairs and banister • Color: heavy lights and heavy darks (women's face); men vs.women • Value: can be seen also on women's face from top to bottom or red coats • Line: created by red line from banister • Space: uses it to make himself focal point
Principles of Design • Balance: seen through the colors; # of men vs. women; not symmetrical • Contrast: rooted from the colors he chose the vibrant going against the darker colors • Rhythm/ Pattern: a little in background of blue and orange • Proportion: the people are of the same height relative to others with exception of him; beam is bigger then other objects • Emphasis: I want to it is placed on the women on bottom left but also all the women since they have the vibrant colors
What Piece Communicates Before Research After Research • I was dead wrong after researching the intended intrepratation • I thought it was representing a fun filled night conversing • Seeing these people going out having fun made me reminiscent of fun nights I have had living in Chicago • Drank to much due to depression of being a midget (Earthquakes) • Actually him in middle of picture • Portraying his downfall from being bullied for his short stature • Also women in blue was famous singer Mary Milton
Beauty/Is Piece Beautiful? • (personally)Mixed theory • (artist) Subjective; An internal emotion that is externalized through the painting and exists in the eye of the beholder; causes a connection between painter and viewer • Many interviewed said beauty can not be defined or to hard to explain • I do believe there is beauty in this piece • Beauty from Meaning: Does not always have to have positive meaning; in a strangeway there is beauty in his sadness (like this artwork) • Beauty in aesthetics: The colors chosen in this piece gives it glowing characteristics
