5th international symposium on IWRM and 3rd international symposium on methodology in hydrology November 19-21, 2010 Hohai University, Nanjing China Drainage Scavenger Tube wells can Sustain Rural Livelihoods: Evidence from Sindh Pakistan Prof. BakhshalLashari Mehran University of Engg and Tech, Jamshoro, Sindh, Pakistan
Outlines • Background introduction • Approaches/methodology • Results and discussions • Conclusion and suggestions
BACKGROUNG INTRODUCTION • Pakistan is arid to semi-arid country, and average rainfall is below 240 mm • Population is about 180 m (67.5% in the rural areas) • Total area is 196.7 million acres • Cropped area is about 48.73 million acres • Major crops: Wheat, rice, cotton, and sugarcane • contributing 35% to the gross domestic product (GDP) and providing 60% of the labor force
BACKGROUND INTRODUCTION • Irrigation canals of about 56,073 km length • farm channels of about 1.6 million Km and • irrigation area of about 35 Mn acres • Created water- logging and salinity
Drainage options • Left Bank Outfall Drainage (LBOD) project • Scavenger tube wells • Tile drainage • Saline tube wells • Surface drains
Paper focuses on STW: • Technological impact • Social impact and • Economical impact

Results and Discussions Up coning of saline water (Technological behaviour)
Conclusions STW is good option to control saltwater movement in to fresh water zone by keeping interface at constant level provided pumping ratio (FW:SW) is 1:1. STW improved waterlogged and salt-affected lands within a period of five years. Land value and crop yield increased significantly
Conclusions Women were benefited more b/c they get employment during wheat and cotton crops harvesting in each season. Farmer community was happy with the intervention of STW, b/c of additional fresh water However, they were worried about O&M cost.
