What is a rural community? • A rural community is a non-urban area such as a city of less than 100,000 residents. • For most folks it means farm country, but there are other types of rural communities. • There is no masstransit system so residents must use their owntransportation to go anywhere. • Neighbours are usually farapart. • Businesses and school buildings are often smaller than those in urban communities. • There are schools, offices, stores and post offices, but far fewer than in urban communities.
What are the different types of rural communities? • There are 4 main types of ruralcommunities • Farming Communities • Fishing/Port Communities • Mining Communities • Forestry Communities
Farming Communities • Another name for the farming industry is agriculture • Farming communities develop in areas where there is rich soil and mild climate. • A farm is an area of land primarily devoted to the practice of producing and managing food (produce – like fruits and vegetables, grains – like wheat and barley, or livestock – like cows and chickens) or fibres – like cotton. • Farms may be owned and operated by a single person, family, community, corporation or a company. • The population of most farming communities is low. • There are many fields used for crops. • People must drive in order to go to town. • There are post offices, stores, schools and restaurants. • There is a lot of land in between neighbours.

Fishing/Port Communities • A fishingcommunity is a village, usually located near a fishing ground. • People in a fishing community make most of their income catchingfish and harvestingseafood. • Coastal fishing villages are often located around a small naturalharbour which provides safe place for a village fleet of fishing boats. • A harbour is a place where ships, boats, and barges can seek shelter from stormy weather, or else are stored for future use. • Harbours and ports are often confused with each other. A port is a facility for loading and unloading vessels; ports are usually located in harbours.

Mining Communities • A mining community, also known as a mining town or a mining camp, is a community that houses miners. • Mining communities are usually created around a mine or a quarry for the extraction or the removal of ore from the earth. • A mine is excavation or digging deep in the earth from which ores like gold or nickel and minerals like iron and rock salt are extracted or removed from the earth • Oil is also mined from the earth

Forestry Communities • Many communities have been built around the forestryindustry. • Forestry involves cuttingtrees and using wood to make products like paper. • Thousands of people have jobs related to the cutting of trees. The ones who cut down the trees are called lumberjacks. • Mills are businesses that use machinery to make products using wood.
