  2. Treaty of Chicago • 1833 Chippewa, Ottawa, Potawatomi Indians sold their land to Americans for $1 million. ½ to be paid upfront, ½ over next to years • Indians relocated to reservations west of the Mississippi River • Some promised $ was never received by the Indians

  4. Resettlement and Urban Progress Chicago in 1837 Chicago incorporates as a city in 1837 Population growth and technological development was rapid (fast). Chicago was a multicultural city Chicago in 1857

  5. The Illinois and Michigan Canal Connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River and thus to the Gulf of Mexico by way of a canal joining the Chicago and Illinois Rivers. Construction began in 1822

  10. Population Explosion • Look at the chart on page 38: 1800s Population Explosion • What was the population in 1833? • What was the population in 1870? • Which 10 year period showed the highest growth rate? • Explain the title of the chart.
