PANACHE • pa·nache • noun • 1. a grand or flamboyant manner; verve; style; flair: The actor who would play Cyrano must have panache. • 2. an ornamental plume of feathers, tassels, or the like, especially one worn on a helmet or cap. • Panache, the word for “white plumes” in French, literally denotes the plumes above a soldier’s headgear. But it also refers to a certain flair or swagger that serves as the outward sign of a person’s noble internal qualities. The “white plumes” that adorn Cyrano’s hat symbolize freedom, his good name, the deeds that decorate or clothe his soul, his bristling wit, his courage, truth–in short, all that is noble in Cyrano’s character. In the end of Rostand’s play Cyrano has nothing left but his panache. • The French, they say, have a word for it. To sum up dash, flamboyance, swagger and verve, that word is “panache.”
