  2. Review • The National Assembly writes the Declaration of Rights of Man to give French citizens more rights… • The Estate system is destroyed!!!!! • The King and the Clergies started losing their power  so…….

  3. King & Queen try to Escape (1791) • King Louis XVI figured that this revolution was for real and that his family was in danger!!!  • He made a plan for them all to escape to Austria.  • However, as they neared the French border a postman recognized him and they were all forced to return back to Paris!  • A lot of citizens got mad that he tried to escape!  King started having more enemies and radical people who hated him!

  7. France goes to war…. • Many of the European nations like Austria and Prussia were afraid of the new revolutionaries and their new ideas + wanted to put the French King back in power  This led to WAR with France!!! • CHAOS AND FEAR SPREAD IN FRANCE!

September Massacres • Rumors began to spread around town that the King’s supporters (that were currently in a prison) were going to break out of prison and control the city! • Angry and scared citizens responded by  attacking the prison and killing over 1,000 prisoners, mostly INNOCENT! They also killed many nobles, priests, and supports of the king. • The massacre showed how angry and violent the people of France had become  The people demanded change in government!

THE NATIONAL CONVENTION • To respond to the chaos and crisis, the Legislative Assembly (French parliament) met to make a new government!. • They abolished (ended) the monarchy (got rid of the King) and created a REPUBLIC under the authority of the NATIONAL CONVENTION. • They gave all MALE citizens over 21 the right to vote

France becomes RADICAL  JACOBINS • The Jacobins werea group of radical French people who took control of France and called for death of all those who supported the king. • The Jacobins were radical, violent, and extreme! • Their leader was Robespierre • The Jacobins put the King Louis on trial  found him guilty  ordered him to be beheaded by the guillotine (new killing machine)

  12. The Execution of the King led to… • Supporters of the king (including PEASANTS) were HORRIFIED and scared of the King’s execution • Many people started being Terrified of the Jacobins! • Terror spreads…..
