Aboriginal Health • 17 year gap in life expectancy • Aboriginal Community’s Holistic definition of Aboriginal Health • “Aboriginal health is not just the physical well being of an individual but is the social, emotional and cultural well being of the whole community in which each individual is able to achieve their full potential thereby bringing about the total well being of their community.” (NAHS, 1989).

An Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service is: • incorporated Aboriginal organisation. • Initiated by a local Aboriginal community. • based in an Aboriginal community. • governed by an Aboriginal body elected by the local Aboriginal community. • delivers a holistic and culturally appropriate health service to the community that controls it.
Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services • Vary in size and range of services • Services can include: • primary health and clinical care, including GPs • public health, chronic disease, health promotion, nutrition, physical activity, eye health, ear health, sexual health, drug and alcohol • HACC, transport, family support • Men’s, women’s, children health, youth • Dental • etc etc etc • Large employers of Aboriginal people nationally • Important centres of activity and sources of pride for Aboriginal communities
Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council (AH&MRC) • Peak organisation representing >50 Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations in NSW • Partnership with NSW Government • Partnership with DOHA et al • AH&MRC business units include: • Public Health • Aboriginal Health College – AHW training, cultural safety training • Member Support – workforce, IT, accreditation etc • Ethics Committee • Research - CRIAH
Partnerships • One definition: “a mutually beneficial relationship that is transparent and accountable and based on agreed ethical principles, mutual understanding, respect and trust • A key approach for ACCHSs
What makes partnerships successful? • Considerable effort • Time to develop • Realistic and specific objectives • Goals or objectives that the individual organisations cannot achieve by working alone • Adequate resources • Attention to power imbalances
