Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) 5/5 stars Stars: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Edward Furlong, Linda Hamilton This sequel streaks ahead of its predecessor, with ahead of its time special effects, brilliant acting, action sequences, sets, and scenes, and an unsurpassed impending feeling of dread. It’s been 25 years since Terminator 2 came out and it still stands as a movie that’s virtually unsurpassed in its class. Delivered by always bankable James Cameron, and Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime, the film perfectly captured drama, suspense, and heart pounding action scenes. Terminator 2 is such a good action movie that you almost forget that it’s a sci-fi, too. Kicking off at 15 years after the time of the first movie, the opening scenes are of “Judgement Day”, the day when the machines rose up to conquer the world. We’re then introduced to Arnie, as he appears, crouched, naked, from a ball of light. It’s the same terrifying Terminator that we saw in round one of the series. Across town, a similar scene plays out. Arising out of the flash we see the T-1000 (Robert Patrick) emerging. Sarah Conner’s (Hamilton) in a mental hospital, and her son John’s (Furlong) in foster care. It soon becomes clear that the T-1000 has been sent back to wipe John off the face of the Earth, thus preventing a human uprising later in the future, and the original Terminator has been sent back to protect them. The movie follows nails biting escapes from the T-1000, while John appears to build a bond with the machine that’s protecting him. The escape scenes are long and your heart pounds more with each second that the T- 1000 gets closer. The ability of the T-1000 to mimic the appearance of any person, as well as liquefy any part/s of its body into metal makes it a far more terrifying Terminator than we encountered the first time around. Hamilton and Furlong put in excellent, believable performances, and Patrick’s stone-faced T-1000 performance is the stuff that nightmares are made of. While Schwarzenegger’s never been a brilliant actor, this role suits him perfectly.
Moody shots and street scenes really set the any town, America, scene. The movie also features a blindly good score, one of the best in any action movie we’ve ever seen. Perfectly building background suspense, and getting more and more foreboding as the movie progresses, many have tried to mimic this effect, but few have nailed it. Who’ll enjoy this movie? Almost everyone! A favourite among kids, and revered by action, sci-fi, and just general blockbuster fans alike, the movie has been so successful because it appeals to pretty much everyone. Even if you really dislike Schwarzenegger, you’ll be able to get over it because he really does seem just like a machine. A five star movie that has stood the test of time, Terminator 2 outshines the first in the series and is a clear winner over Salvation and Genesis, and let’s just pretend that Rise of the Machines never happened, shall we?
