Polyester and my football jumper By Jack Wangman
The Outfit • The outfit that I have chosen for my presentation today is my Essendon football jumper • I wear my football jumper to all football matches and sometimes when the game is on the TV • I also wear it anywhere because I like my football team
Special features of my outfit • The football jumper design is different for each football team and it separates one team from another, with their different colors • My football team is Essendon and their colors are red and black, a black top with a red stripe across it
I chose this outfit because football jumpers are fun, they make you feel good like your part of a team, and you can support the football club that you like • When you buy an official AFL jumper some of the money goes towards helping your club and not overseas • You can wear your football jumper with all your other football clothes like shorts, pants, scarfs, hats and shoes
The fibre in the fabric • The main and only fibre of my football jumper is polyester • 1926 was the first year research was done into making polyester • Polyester is a chemical term where poly means many and ester means chemicals • The main ingredient used in making polyester is called ethylene which comes from petroleum which is oil from the ground
To make polyester the ethylene is combined with another chemical at 210 degrees, which makes another chemical which we can call alcohol • The alcohol is then combined with an acid at a temperature of 280 degrees and drained through a slot into ribbons • The ribbons are allowed to cool and then they are cut into tiny chips • The chips are melted at 270 degrees to form a solution like syrup
The syrup is poured through what is called a spinneret, which is a metal funnel with tiny holes at the bottom • This is what makes the single strands of polyester and when they dry they become solid and strong fibers • They are then wound onto large bobbins ready to be made into material
Polyester is a man made fabric, its very hard wearing and doesn’t crease, so there is no need to iron it • It doesn’t shrink, it resists flames, it washes well and dries quickly • This is why polyester is the perfect material for a football jumper, and Essendon is the perfect team
Conclusion • There are many types of materials that could be used for this item of clothing but polyester is the best for the reasons I have previously mentioned
