  1. L.G – To improve students ability to write an analytical essay. the ideas are not all my own, they come from PLC and collaboration with other year 8 teachers. So thanks 

  2. Study of ‘The Giver’ • Fantastic discussion from a rich text, this wasn’t translating into writing. • Running out of time at the end of the unit to teach writing Why???

  3. Why students forget this stuff year after year? • In teaching structure do you always compromise ideas? Questions

  4. To use focused formative assessment • To narrow the focus of my teaching, spending time teaching TEEL • To teach the skill throughout the unit – 3 paragraphs in total, to acknowledge that we need practice to learn a new skill • To make a rubric work properly • To enable students to see their own growth Solution

  5. Used the same rubric/hamburger, tracks growth • To make this a piece of paper students were attached to I used SY’s idea of creating their own hamburger It’s all about the hamburger.

  6. All students moved up the rubric through the unit • Easy to teach essay writing at the end • The average grade for my class was higher than I have ever had for that class • It was easy to see who needed to be referred to PRTI • There was richer discussion of text • I think it’s going to stick! • If it does stick, I know where I can move from here Results

  7. Will I need to teach this again with ‘Alice’? • Do we need to teach students such a rigid structure so early? • Will this help year 9 teachers extend students? Questions unanswered
