Glucose + Oxygen → Carbon dioxide + Water + Energy (ATP) 6H12O6 + 6O2 → 6CO2 + 6H2O + ATP
Vernier Lab Part II • Determine whether germinated or non-germinated peas respire. • Use a CO2 gas sensor to measure concentrations of carbon dioxide. • Study the effect of temperature on cell respiration. • Compare the rates of cell respirations in germinated peas and non-germinated peas.
Materials • CO2 sensor • 250mL respiration chamber Computer • Logger pro software • Lab pro (sensor-computer interface) • 25 germinating peas • 25 non-germinating peas • Thermometer
Set up CO2 sensor Germinated Peas Lab pro Non germinated peas
Extensions • Measure O2 concentration using germinated and non germinating peas at different temperatures • Measure pressure changes during respiration of germinating and non-germinating peas at different temperatures (AP Biology lab) • Simultaneously measure O2 and CO2 concentrations at different temperatures for germinating and non-germinating peas.
Sensors • CO2 sensor • O2 sensor • Gas pressure sensors
