  3. I. Spread of New Ideas A. Paper 1. 700’s spread from China to Middle East 2. Europe by 1300’s. B. Printing 1. mid 1400’s Johann Gutenberg developed printing press w/movable type 2. first printed book Bible in Latin (later translated & printed). 3. more people learned to read due to increased availability of books.

  4. II. New Universities A. Italian university teachers mostly humanist B. Thus, Renaissance ideas taken back to home countries C. France, Germany & Netherlands opened new universities & taught Renaissance ideas. • Noble women educated in humanities; when married, brought humanism to new country

  5. III. Christian humanism A. focus on history of Christianity. B. Called for church reform

  6. C. In 1509, Erasmus published The Praise of Folly criticized corrupt clergy 1. disliked church ritual 2. wanted more emphasis on devotion to God & Jesus

  7. IV. Art A. Humans realistic w/physical flaws (not like Greek gods) B. Painted objects very clearly C. Painted scenes of daily life ie. Pieter Brueghel of Belgium
