  6. Increasing the adult presence in our schools Program Research

  7. Parent Involvement Data • New research shows that students do much better in school when their parents are actively involved in their education (Science Daily). • A meta-analysis of 77 studies indicates that parent involvement is associated with higher student achievement outcomes (Harvard Graduate School of Education)

  8. Resiliency • Re-sil-ience(noun) Also, re-sil-ien-cy.Origin: 1620-Latin resilli (ens), to spring back, rebound (see resilient) • ability to recover readily from adversity, or the like: buoyancy. • When things get tough, some people continue to “swim along” while others “nearly sink.” People who are able to “swim” through difficult times are more resilient. They “bounce back” from stressful experiences.

  9. Real Life Example • Jeffery • There is no amount of time too small to make a difference

  10. So What? • Research tells us that some of the important skills that help people to bounce back can be learned by anyone. • And children learn these skills by watching the adults around them. • Hence our program…we are going to increase the chances of our children being successful by surrounding them with positive adults!

  11. Program Implementation • The History… • The Hazelwood School District launched an innovative program designed to increase the male presence in all of its schools. • The HSD Heroes Program recruits parents, grandparents, business owners, faith based community leaders, civic organizations and more to help students to become more successful

  12. Components of the HSD Heroes Program • OASIS Reading Mentor • School Climate • School Program/Events • Sports Program • Recruiting • Academics • After School Clubs/Programs • Classroom Support • District-wide Events • Lunchroom Buddy • Mentoring

  14. HSD Heroes help in many ways • Help load/unload cars and buses • Help prepare materials for lessons • Read with students in a classroom • Eat lunch with students • Help manage school climate • Tutor students in a classroom • Provide extra supervision at recess • Provide support for substitute teachers

  15. How do we do this?Building Coordinators • Recruiter for HSD Heroes program • Help educate staff, parents, friends, etc., about the program • Become a resident expert • Train your volunteers • Put them to work right away in your buildings • Help volunteers feel welcomed and appreciated
