Sport for Social Change • In 2007 Nike supported the creation of a global movement: the Sport for Social Change Network – SSCN, that in Brazil is named REMS – Rede Esporte pela Mudança Social. • The movement gathers 30 non-profit organizations in Brazil, leaded by UNDP – United Nations Development Program. Those NGOs are from all over the country, although mostly from Rio and São Paulo. All of them believe in the power of sports to change lives. Most of them run sport for change programs. All of them work direcltly with excluded youth and youth related themes. • In Southern Africa and Eastern Africa, the same movement is alive. • The SPORT FOR SOCIAL CHANGE INTERNATIONAL WEEK was the first global meeting of those groups, after they started to work. • It was also the first time to show up to an open audience with innovation and sustainability ideas around sports.

THE EVENT • One week, one city: thinking about sport for social change • 4 continents represented through sport for change initiatives • SSCN meeting on governance issues • Open meeting to build a common agenda of sport for change • Inspiring lecture with Auma Obama • 11 Presentations and Panels around sport for change programs and new ideas • Marketplace with +10 initiatives for Social inclusion through sports productive chain • 4 sport for change workshops, with SSCN methodologies/members • UNDP and J.Leiva workshops on the Human Development Index Report, through the lens of sports and on tax benefits for sports programs • Manifesto launched, by Athletes and former athletes

LEGACY AND SUSTAINABILITY • Cameron Sinclair talked about the Architecture for Humanity efforts to rebuild communities through sports and about sustainable sports facilities that help communities to save energy and water, while providing a safe place to play. • Mel Young talked about how Homeless World Cup (the event and the programmes ran by the HWC Foundation) support homeless people around the world to change their lives through futebol

SSCN MEETING • Representatives of all 30 NGOs • Decision about the institucionalization of the Network • ‘Athletes for Citizenship’ legitimated as the new Executive Secretary • Presentation about the new role of UNDP on the network • Manifesto “pre-development” • Definition of the 6 sport for change themes that will be considered on next steps • Agreement on considering the next sports events in Brazil as a priority for the SSCN Agenda
